Effect of Topical Minoxidil in Male Pattern Alopecia

Abstract
Thirty healthy Korean men with male pattern alopecia were subjected for 24 week trial of topical 2% minoxidil. Twenty-two of the 30 completed the 24-week treatment schedule. The results were as follows:
1. Fifteen(68.2%) of the 22 men responded to the treatment.
2. In ten(45. 5%), the therapeutic response was more pronounced at 24th week than at 16th week.
3. Seven(31.8%) of the 22 men showed definite decrease in bald area resulting in cosmetically improved appearance.
4. During the treatment, no one showed any systemic or local side effects.
These results show that the beneficial effect of minoxidil for male pattern alopecia is stronger when the duration of treatment is longer and that it can be used with relative safety.
